The LEGO Spike robot is a modular educational platform developed by LEGO Education. Designed to introduce students to programming, robotics and engineering, it becomes a particularly powerful tool when used in conjunction with AlphAI software. Thanks to this combination, learners discover not only mechanics and algorithmic logic, but also the concepts of artificial intelligence in an intuitive and playful way.
The LEGO Spike range consists mainly of two models:
- LEGO Spike Prime: designed for middle and high school students, it features more powerful motors, a central brick with display and numerous ports, and a wide range of sensors.
- LEGO Spike Essential: aimed at primary school pupils, it's simpler, more compact, but retains the essentials for robotic and logical activities.
🧩 Robot composition
Each LEGO Spike pack includes a series of elements that can be grouped into three main categories:
🔧 1. Construction elements
- LEGO Technic blocks for assembling structures
- Axles, gears, connectors to create a variety of mechanisms
- Modular mounting platforms
⚙️ 2. Performers
- A programmable matrix (hub) with input and output ports
- Medium and large motors: used to animate robots (wheels, arms, grippers, etc.)
The motors are precise and feature position feedback, which is useful for AI tasks.
👁️ 3. Sensors
- Distance sensor (ultrasound ): detects obstacles or measures distances
- Color sensor: identifies colors, detects reflected light
- Force sensor (button): detects pressure or pressing
- Integrated accelerometer: measures inclination and robot movement
The number and type of these sensors may vary depending on the version (Essential or Prime), but each one enables various AI strategies to be exploited, such as environment recognition or reaction to sensory stimuli.
🖥️ Operating environment
LEGO Spike robots are designed to operate on flat surfaces, such as tables or smooth floors, to guarantee precise, reproducible movements. They can be used in a variety of contexts: classroom, laboratory or demonstration area.
